Short-term Vs. Long-term Stress


Before we dive in, let's clarify the definition of stress. According to merriamwebster.com,” a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation”. Everyone has and will experience stress at one point in their lives. The most common stressors come from finances, work, and the responsible load of taking care of your family.

Stress is broken into two categories, long-term and short-term. To begin, short-term stress, also known as acute stress, is just that, short. These are temporary tensions usually does not last any longer than the situation itself or that day. Thankfully, short-term stress does not last long enough to cause extensive damage like long term stress.

Long-term stress, also known as chronic stress, lasts much longer than acute stress and often results in developing long-lasting health issues such as chronic headaches, anxiety, depression, weight gain or weight loss. When you feel that you are becoming overwhelmed try a few of these tips below to minimize your stress and boost your overall health.

  • Make sure your work schedule is not overwhelming you physically and emotionally

  • Make sure your financial decisions are appropriate for your income, so you are not strained

  • Take walks, read a book, or meditate to lower your heart rate
