5 Ways To Shed Those Pesky Holiday Pounds

The holiday season, with its festive gatherings and indulgent treats, often leads to a few extra pounds by the time the new year rolls around—much to our frustration. However, there are many ways you can get back on track and optimize your health and wellness in the best way possible.

Plus, if you’ve put on a few extra pounds, you aren’t alone. And you are also not alone in the journey to shed that excess and feel confident once again. So, let’s start this new year off with a few tips from our staff here at Tampa Spine and Wellness. Not only do they offer Chiropractic services, but with an actual Physical Therapist on staff they take a whole body approach when it comes to loosing weight. So yeah, we are your "back doctor", but we can help you get rid of those pesky holiday pounds.

Tip #1: Simply Move More

Gatherings around the holidays frequently involve sitting, chatting, and, well, eating and drinking. We often move less and eat more. So, as you look forward toward your goals, start with the simple step of moving more. Remember motion is "lotion" the more you move the easier it will be to keep moving.

This may mean taking a walk on your lunch break or after breakfast. Perhaps you can take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator. Maybe consider parking a few spots back to squeeze in a few extra steps. For the more ambitious ones among us, you can even challenge yourself with mini-workouts throughout your day, such as performing five squats every time you pass through your office door. The key? Just move more! Let’s not overcomplicate it.

Tip #2: Fill Up On Protein, Veggies, and Fruit

Many of our holiday treats are packed with carbs and fats. And while our bodies definitely require a certain amount of these nutrients, post-holiday, it may be best to steer our focus toward fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. Fill up on these, so you aren’t tempted by leftovers. (And while you may still indulge in some leftovers, balance is always key!)

Try incorporating oranges, strawberries, blueberries, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, broccoli, chicken, lean beef, fish, and more before the other stuff. Last thing: Planning your meals ahead of time can help you stick to this plan. We will bring more on meal prepping in our next blog!

Tip #3: Get Into a Routine

The holidays often throw a wrench in our weight loss or health goals due to a disruption to our regular routine. Thus, for post-holiday weight loss, developing a consistent routine can ensure you get on track and back to your pre-holiday self.

For example, plan your workout sessions. Plan your meals. Go to bed and wake up at the same times each day. Stay consistent each week as to when you do this.

Tip #4: Drink Up!

No, we aren’t referring to throwing back more alcohol (In fact, on that note, why not join the sober January trend post-holidays? This might just help you reset and refresh!). We’re talking about staying hydrated. Research shows drinking more water can reduce body fat, decrease weight, and even suppress our appetite. In turn, this can help you achieve your weight loss goals that much faster and lead you to eat fewer calories overall.

Consider bringing a water bottle with you wherever you go. On top of this, drinking a glass or two of water before a meal might just help you eat less in one sitting by filling you up beforehand.

Tip #5: De-Stress

Holidays can pile on the stress! Not only is there tons of shopping and cooking to do but, also, many people may experience anxiety regarding social situations or family interactions. So, go ahead and take time for yourself this January. Have that long and warm bath. Do a few deep breathing sessions. Or do what you know helps you unwind.

In turn, this can create space for going after your goals, like those associated with weight loss.
