How to Develop a Healthy Habit

At one point or another, we have all heard of the phrase “small changes make big results.” This quote holds true, whether it is being applied to making healthier eating choices or altering bad habits into good ones. This blog will cover tips for developing a healthy habit and the expectations you should have in the process.

Expectations

It has been commonly said that on average it takes about 21 days to develop a habit, but realistically it takes two months. When stepping into a new change, you are stepping into it not only with a new goal, but you also must step into it with a new mindset. Expect to fail in your process. Meaning, your transition may not be perfect, and setbacks can occur, so do not become disappointed in yourself. To advance forward, you have to sometimes be pulled back.

Dedication

Begin with something small. Small goals are great to use to break into a new lifestyle. Creating smaller goals also eliminates a huge amount of pressure that comes with huge goals. For example, if you set a goal to lose 25 pounds in three weeks, you are most likely to become stressed about hitting that goal versus losing ten pounds in three weeks. The goals and/or changes you want to make for yourself be sure to make them realistic! Better yet, make them a S.M.A.R.T goal. S.M.A.R.T stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.

Developing a healthy habit is just the beginning of changing your life. It is also the first step in doing something positive for yourself, so take advantage of the lessons you will learn about yourself and use them to become a better you.
